CA ROME
Some of the most compelling stories in Piedmont begin not with grand estates, but with individuals whose dedication to the land shapes a family's future. Such is the story of CA'ROME', a boutique winery founded in 1980 by Romano Marengo, a man whose lifelong passion for viticulture inspired him to transform decades of experience into a family estate devoted to producing wines of exceptional character. Nestled in the hills of Barbaresco, CA'ROME' remains proudly family-owned, where every bottle reflects not only the distinctive terroirs of the Langhe but also the values of craftsmanship, integrity, and patience that have guided the Marengo family for generations.
After more than thirty years working in the wine trade, Romano fulfilled a lifelong dream by establishing his own winery alongside his wife Olimpia and their children Giuseppe ("Pino"), Paola, and Maria. Today, the second generation carries that vision forward with the same unwavering commitment to quality. Giuseppe oversees both the vineyards and the cellar, drawing upon his father's teachings while embracing thoughtful innovation, while Paola shares the family's wines and philosophy with customers around the world. Together, they have preserved the intimate, hands-on character that has defined CA'ROME' since its earliest days.
The estate's vineyards occupy some of Piedmont's most coveted landscapes, spanning the prestigious appellations of Barbaresco and Barolo. Historic family parcels in Barbaresco, together with treasured vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba inherited through the family, provide the foundation for wines that express the remarkable diversity of Nebbiolo. From the elegance and perfume characteristic of Barbaresco to the depth and structure synonymous with Serralunga, each vineyard is treated as a unique expression of place, allowing the individuality of every site to shine through.
For the Marengo family, great wine begins long before harvest. Their philosophy centres on meticulous vineyard work, where sustainable farming practices encourage healthy soils, balanced vines, and naturally concentrated fruit. Careful pruning, low yields, green harvesting, and hand-picked grapes ensure that every vintage reaches optimal ripeness while respecting the surrounding environment. Traditional knowledge is complemented by environmentally conscious practices, including organic soil amendments and low-impact treatments, reflecting the family's belief that the future of fine wine depends upon preserving the land that produces it.
In the cellar, intervention is deliberately restrained. Fermentations and élevage are guided with patience rather than haste, allowing each wine to develop its own personality. Long ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, complemented by carefully selected French oak barriques where appropriate, brings harmony and complexity without overshadowing the purity of the fruit. Minimal clarification and filtration preserve texture, character, and authenticity, resulting in wines that remain true to both the vineyard and the vintage.
Today, CA'ROME' is recognized as one of the Langhe's quietly accomplished family estates, producing wines that combine precision with soul. Every bottle is a reflection of Romano Marengo's original vision: to honour Piedmont's extraordinary terroirs through honest winemaking, unwavering family dedication, and a profound respect for tradition. As the next generation continues to guide the winery forward, CA'ROME' remains a testament to the enduring belief that the finest wines are those that faithfully tell the story of the people and places from which they come.
