Cordero di Montezemolo

La Morra, Piedmont, Italy

For more than six centuries, the story of Cordero di Montezemolo has been intertwined with one of Barolo's most historic hills. At the heart of the estate lies Monfalletto, a remarkable vineyard in La Morra whose origins can be traced back to the 14th century. Cherished for generations by the noble Falletti family, Monfalletto was considered their most prized possession—a vineyard so exceptional that it remained in the family's care even as other estates changed hands. Today, that same hill continues to define the identity of Cordero di Montezemolo, preserving a legacy that spans nearly 700 years.

The transition to the Cordero di Montezemolo family came in 1941, when Paolo Cordero di Montezemolo inherited the historic estate from his grandmother, Countess Luisa Falletti. Driven by a profound respect for the land and a vision for its future, Paolo modernized the vineyards and winery while safeguarding the traditions that had made Monfalletto one of the Langhe's most revered sites. Today, the estate remains family-owned and is led by siblings Elena and Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo, representing the nineteenth generation devoted to the vineyards of Piedmont.

The estate encompasses more than 50 hectares of organically certified vineyards, carefully planted across some of the Langhe's most prestigious sites, including La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Alba, Guarene and Cherasco. Unlike the fragmented holdings common throughout Barolo, many of Cordero di Montezemolo's vineyards form large, contiguous parcels, allowing meticulous vineyard management while expressing the distinctive character of each site. Nebbiolo remains the soul of the estate, complemented by Barbera, Dolcetto, Arneis and Chardonnay, all cultivated with an unwavering commitment to sustainability and respect for the natural environment.

While history forms the foundation of the estate, its philosophy is firmly rooted in balance, elegance and authenticity. Rather than pursuing power for its own sake, Cordero di Montezemolo crafts wines that faithfully reflect their origin, combining precision with the grace that has long distinguished the finest expressions of La Morra. Their flagship Barolo Monfalletto brings together fruit from the estate's historic vineyard to create a wine that captures the essence of the property—refined, expressive and approachable in its youth while possessing the structure to reward patient cellaring. Alongside celebrated single-vineyard Barolos such as Enrico VI and Gattera, the portfolio showcases the diversity and remarkable terroirs of the Langhe.

Today, Cordero di Montezemolo stands as one of Barolo's enduring family estates—a producer where centuries of heritage meet thoughtful stewardship, and where every bottle tells the continuing story of Monfalletto, one of Piedmont's truly historic vineyards.
