CORIOLE VINEYARDS
MCLAREN VALE, AUSTRALIA
Coriole Vineyards
Coriole Vineyards is situated in the undulating hills of the McLaren Vale wine region in South Australia, just within sight of the sea. Coriole was founded by Hugh and Molly Lloyd in the 1960s, and is still owned and managed by the Lloyd family today.
Shiraz is the great tradition of McLaren Vale going back over 150 years, and is the major variety planted on the estate. Alongside shiraz, cabernet, grenache and chenin blanc, Coriole produces alternative varieties such as piquepuol, nero d’avola, montepulciano and barbera. Coriole has been a pioneer of Italian varieties since 1985, with the oldest sangiovese and fiano vineyards in Australia.
The soils on the Estate vineyard are predominantly terra rossa soils - shallow with red-brown earth over hard capped limestone. This foundation tends to produce deeply coloured red wines with good structure that show great capacity for ageing.
Coriole has 25 different vineyards ranging from over newly-planted varieties to shiraz vineyards dating back over 100 years. Coriole manages small vineyards in the sub-regions of Blewitt Springs, Willunga and McLaren Flat providing a range of different terroir to work with.
Winemaker Duncan Lloyd grew up amongst the vineyards, but worked in winemaking around the world before returning to Coriole in 2017. He is passionate about honouring Coriole’s history and tradition whilst continuing to innovate in alternative varieties and winemaking styles.
